On June 10th and 11th, 2024, the Leiden Human Evolution Collective is organizing a small symposium on the topic of “Fire in Human Evolution”, hosted at the Faculty of Archaeology, and supported by the KIEM grant. The event is designed to bring together researchers from within Leiden and beyond working in different disciplines, and has sessions on five main themes:
- Fire perception, social interaction, and culture
- Fire as landscape management
- Fire, cooking and diet
- Fire technology and cognition
- Archaeological signatures of fire
Invited speakers (4-5 per session) will give brief talks, which will be followed by a moderated discussion with the audience. The symposium is explicitly interdisciplinary and aimed at a broad academic audience. It will include catered lunches (all vegetarian/vegan), coffee and tea, and a social event at PLNT. Participants for a small contribution to cover food and drinks during the event (€15).
