Dialogue session faculty office: Safe research and academic freedom within Humanities

Date
Tuesday 4 June 2024
Time
Address
Lipsius

Room
1.28

Knowledge security, ethics, data management and academic freedom are current topics in universities and the media. Within the Faculty of Humanities we, too, are working on the future development of these themes. It is important that the policy and support from the faculty reflect the reality of conducting research within the humanities. We are therefore going to hold discussions with researchers to discuss the obstacles they encounter in carrying out their research in terms of the risk of influencing partners both internal and external, dealing with politically controversial topics or working with sensitive data.

Examples of questions we want to discuss:

- How do we handle unwanted interference by collaboration partners in setting up and carrying out research, while respecting academic freedom and integrity? Consider, for example, financial dependence on a government or institution that imposes restrictive conditions regarding the publication of certain data.

 -  How do we handle research that may involve a potential risk for the researcher themselves, the research group, students, the faculty or the university? These risks are not just physical, but also include cybersecurity, for example.

The outcomes of this dialogue will help the Policy, Advice and Strategy (BAS) department of the faculty office in organising good support and advising on policy. For example, about the development of a university evaluation framework for international PhD candidates funded by scholarships.

We would like to invite interested researchers and other colleagues to this session to enter into dialogue and share their experiences with one another. The session will take the form of an informal lunch session and will be held on Tuesday 4 June 2024 from 12.00-13.30 hrs in Lipsius room 1.28.

If you are interested in attending, you can sign up for the session here  (deadline 27 May at 9.00 hrs,  to allow for the catering).
