The Great Book Robbery is a powerful and poignant chronicle of cultural destruction. The documentary tells the story of the 70,000 Palestinian books that were looted by the newly formed State of Israel in 1948. After the screening there will be a panel on book ownership, the role of books as cultural objects, and issues around cultural heritage
This panel is part of the Leiden University teach-in series on Palestine and Israel Challenging Myths and Exceptions.

About the speakers
Benny Brunner is an Israeli-Dutch filmmaker. Since the late 1980s, he has written, directed & produced films about the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, about Jewish history, and films concerning the modern history of the Middle East.
Jan Bos is a documentary heritage consultant. In 2018 he retired as Head of Collections
at the KB, National Library of the Netherlands. Since 2006 he has been involved in the
UNESCO Memory of the World programme.
Marieke van Meer is Head of Special Collections at Leiden University Library. Having
worked at various heritage institutions, she specialises in collection management and
preservation, as well as on provenance and ethical questions of collections.
The panel will be chaired by Andrea Reyes Elizondo, a researcher at CWTS and an external PhD candidate at LUCAS working on research integrity issues and reading possibilities in New Spain.
