In the January session of the Global Histories of Knowledge series, Wouter de Vries presents his new research ideas:
Seeing new things with old eyes
Whether it is modes of representation, emotional regimes or the scientific method: how we come to see, influences what we see. I want to explore this ‘seeing’ by looking at how the production of visual representations of the new is mediated by training, skill and the ‘rules’ of the medium.
For this talk, I will focus on one case-study in particular: shaping the colonial space of Surinam, Berbice, etc. in the early modern era. The overarching question of my (VENI?) research proposal is: How did (in)formal training shape experience, and by extension European encounters with the ‘new’?
Please join us for Wouter’s presentation and a friendly discussion. All are welcome.
