GlühTwine Workshop

Are you looking for a fun and creatively stimulating event to herald in the holiday break? Sign up for GlühTwine! Registration link at the very end of this page.

GlühTwine is a
LUCDH & Past-at-Play Lab workshop-meets-game jam taking place from 13:00 - 17:00 on Friday, 6 December 2024.

In this event you will:

  • Learn the basics of Twine, an interactive narrative game engine.
  • Hear about some Do’s and Dont’s of interactive narratives and about basic interactive narrative structures.
  • Get to know more about the role of play and interactive narrative design in research, education, and outreach
  • Have fun with some of your fellow students/colleagues by making a small game.

What is GlühTwine?

During GlühTwine you will work with Twine 2 (www.twinery.org). Twine is a tool for the creation and publication of interactive narratives. A good way to think of it is as the digital evolution of the “choose your own adventure” book. An oft-used platform for innovative indie and conceptual text-games, Twine can also provide a new tool to think with for researchers, for teachers to engage students, or to present your knowledge to the public in a way that is fun and accessible.

If you are wondering about what Twine games look like? We suggest trying some of these Twine games before the start of the workshop:

  • Emily Short’s Bee: dendry.github.io/bee/
  • BraveMule’s Beneath Floes
  • Anna Antropy’s Queers in Love at the End of the Universe
  • Zoë Quinn’s Depression Quest: depressionquest.com/
  • Angus’ Toss a Conquistador: shoresoftime.com/games/conquistadors
  • Aris and Angus’ Churchill’s Doctor (a Twine made in just two hours): shoresoftime.com/games/churchill

If you are really eager to know more, you could even already prepare with this Twine tutorial: www.shoresoftime.com/games/twine_intro (made for the Exploring the Past in the Digital Present course)

Programme

13:00 Welcome
13:15 Intro to Twine
14:00 Break
14:15 Twine Concept and Structure
14:30 Write!
16:10: Submit Twines
16:15: Play! And a spot of the real Glühwine + cookies with LUCDH team members!

At the start of the event Aris Politopoulos (Archaeology/LUCAS) and Angus Mol (LUCDH) will provide an introduction to Twine, in which we will discuss how to design interactive narratives, write and link passages, do basic styling and coding, and publish twine stories.

After this, the event will take the shape of a mini-game jam, where participants will work in teams of two to three on the creation of a Twine, based on a holiday-meets-the-Humanities theme (as part of the jam, we will only let you know what the theme is at the workshop).

In the last hour of GlühTwine we will play through and discuss the Twines that have been created by all the workshop participants.

What do you need?

Twine 2 is free, browser-based, and outputs .html files. It is also really easy to learn. So, really all you need to participate is an internet-connected computer with an updated browser!

Just to make sure everything runs smoothly, please download and install Twine 2’s most recent version via Twinery.org. In addition, to make collaboration possible, we will also ask participants to sign into Microsoft Teams and have a working microphone so we are able to communicate with each other.

The workshop is open to all Leiden staff and students (18 participants max)! No previous experience with Twine or coding needed. If you would like to participate, please sign up with link below.
