Traditionally, we welcome a special guest to join the Leiden community in celebrating International Human Rights Day on the 10thof December. This year’s anniversary is particularly significant as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
This year we are honoured to have Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories Occupied since 1967, as our guest speaker. Ms Albanese will discuss the legal implications of the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.
Ms Albanese was appointed as Special Rapporteur by the Human Rights Council in March 2022. She is an international lawyer with in-depth knowledge of the Israel-Palestine question, with a particular focus on the issue of Palestinian refugees. She also previously worked as a human rights expert for the United Nations.
In her lecture, Ms Albanese will talk about her mandate as an independent expert on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, especially in light of the Israel-Hamas war She will also reflect on the role of Hague-based courts in addressing the current situation. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session. The event will be moderated by Professor Rick Lawson and Assistant Professor Giulia Pinzauti.
