How do conflicts escalate? Escalation and the existence of an escalation ladder, which denotes conflicts reaching ever increasing levels of intensity, are often used terms but have been little developed academically. Beyond the original context of the Cold War where these ideas originated, escalation can take many different forms. How does an aggravation of conflict occur? How can we understand the pathways of small-scale disagreements getting completely out of hand and ending in large-scale bloodshed? In this public lecture, escalation will be discussed and debated as a key concept and as a perennial phenomenon in the many different conflicts in human history.
This lecture is based on professor Duyvesteyn’s book Rebels and Conflict Escalation: Explaining the Rise and Decline in Violence (Cambridge University Press 2020).
