We are excited to announce that the next ILI (Intimate Legal Interactions) meeting will take place on April 19th , and our selected reading will be Chapter 6, “Power and Projects: Reflections on Agency” from Sherry B. Ortner's book “Anthropology and Social Theory: Culture, Power, and the Acting Subject”.
In this chapter, Ortner reflects on the concept of agency and its relationship to power and social structures. She argues that agency is not a fixed or inherent quality possessed by individuals, but rather a dynamic and situated phenomenon that emerges from social practices and cultural meanings. Ortner’s ideas on agency draw from the work of other prominent theorists such as Pierre Bourdieu, Anthony Giddens, and Jean Comaroff. As such, this chapter will provide a useful point of entry into broader debates about agency and social theory.
To make the most of our discussion, we ask that all participants read Chapter 6 before our meeting on April 19th. You can access the chapter via this link. If you have problems accessing it, please send an email to h.horii@law.leidenuniv.nl.
Date: April 19th 16:00-17:30
