Programme
The focus of this year’s symposium is the five main student well-being themes at Leiden University. During keynote speeches, workshops and lectures, we will discuss: awareness, prevention, developing expertise, providing help and ensuring a safe study climate. In doing so, we aim to offer lecturers, study advisers, student counsellors and all colleagues who have contact with students the tools they need to make a positive contribution to the well-being of our students.

Keynotes
Dean of the Faculty of Law, Joanne van der Leun, will open the symposium. During her keynote she will take us through the Vision of Student Well-being.
This year, the second keynote will be given by Rutger Kappe, Lecturer in Study Success at Hogeschool Inholland. He is a much sought-after speaker on the theme of social connectivity and student well-being, and since 2015 has conducted research on improving study and student success in higher education. In his presentation he will take us through his four practical strategies for maintaining balance and enhancing student well-being.
Workshop rounds
Do you want to develop your skills and knowledge about student well-being? You can register for the workshops on the registration form. Don't wait too long though, because some workshops have a maximum number of participants. We ask that you indicate a first and second choice per workshop round. Some workshops are offered in both the first and second round of workshops.

Workshops round 1 | 11:30 - 12:30
Simone Keijsers (trainer SOZ)
Talking to students is sometimes more complicated than you would like it to be. You cannot pinpoint it exactly, but the conversation seems to be difficult or stilted. What should you say and not say?
The aim of this workshop is to help you understand the situation a bit better and give you some tools to handle these difficult conversations. You will be given some useful tools and the opportunity to practise, to expand your repertoire when you have to engage in difficult conversations.
Gabriella Thompson (Our Bodies Our Voice)
Bystander Intervention Training teaches individuals how to recognise and intervene safely in situations where they feel the need to act. For example, bystander intervention may be of use in situations where you encounter bullying, discrimination, sexual harassment or other types of unacceptable behaviour. This workshop develops participants’ skills in intervening in a variety of challenging, real-life situations and strengthens their assertiveness in both personal and external experiences.

Eva van der Meer (career adviser, SEA) & Hagar Donners (psychological counsellor, SEA)
As students progress through their academic studies, they encounter a variety of choices that can often trigger stress, such as choosing courses or a minor subject, selecting a master's degree programme, finding an internship, and deciding on a thesis topic. These are the kinds of situations where students may seek guidance from staff members. This workshop aims to provide staff members with the knowledge and skills you need to assist students in the decision-making process by offering information on the choice process and interactive exercises to enhance their communication skills relating to this topic.
