Fourth Annual Leiden Austrian Studies Lecture given by Professor John Connelly (Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor of European History at The University of California, Berkeley and Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin), titled “Was the Habsburg Empire an Empire?”.
After the lecture, please join us for the awarding of the Austrian Studies Foundation Hugo Weiland Prize for best thesis in Central European Studies and a reception with food and drinks.
John Connelly
Professor John Connelly joins us from Berlin, where he is currently a Fellow of the American Academy. At the University of California, Berkeley he is the Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor of European History. His books include Captive University: The Sovietization of East German, Czech and Polish Higher Education, 1945-1956 (2000) which won the 2001 George Beer Award of the American Historical Association; From Enemy to Brothere: The Revolution in Catholic Teaching on the Jews (2012) which was awarded the John Gilmary Shea prize of the American Catholic Historical Association; and From Peoples into Nations: A History of Eastern Europe (2020). He has written for many notable academic journals as well as Commonweal, The Nation, The Washington Post, the London Review of Books, the Neue Zürcher and. He is on the editorial boards of Slavic Review and Contemporary European History.
