The EAMENA project was set up in response to the very public destruction of cultural heritage in the Middle East that became a feature of recent conflicts. The project was designed to rapidly record and evaluate the status of the archaeological landscape of the region to help preserve and protect it, using remote sensing as the primary means to acquire new data and establishing a regional database to make the information accessible. In addition to the data gathered, the project has generated debates on the structure of Historic Environment Records, the forms of research enabled by this data, post-colonial relationships, and data-sovereignty.
