What is the exhibition about?
The exhibition Caribbean Ties. Connected people, then and now focuses on putting a new perspective on the Caribbean Indigenous history narratives. In that regard, special attention was put towards the effects of colonial invasion, exploitation, and the transformation of Caribbean cultures and societies. Therefore, the exhibition aims to preserve the tangible and intangible heritage of the Caribbean region and increase historical consciousness.
One of the central issues of the exhibition is the complex cultural diversity which existed in the area before 1492 but is in an altered form visible nowadays as well. Hence, exploring connections between past and present Indigenous cultures and current multi-ethnic communities provides the visitors with a fresh look.
How was it developed?
The exhibition is one of the significant outcomes of the Nexus 1492 project: New world encounters in a globalizing world, carried out between 2013 and 2019 and funded by the European Research Council. Hence, it is based on the extensive collaborative work of many institutions and researchers across the Caribbean and the world. Considering that the NEXUS1492 project has finished, the critical work is upheld and built upon within the CaribTRAILS project.
Activities at the exhibition
Various activities, such as lectures by guest speakers and a variety of workshops like art and dance workshops, will accompany the exhibition. The complete calendar of the activities will be announced soon.
