Learning strategies and mechanisms in Nature to help solve human challenges with dr. ir. Laura Lee Stevens

A series organized in collaboration with Hortus botanicus Leiden.

Ever wondered how Hermit Crabs recycle materials? How Bats leverage cyclic processes? How Meer-cats cultivate cooperative relationships? Why the Artic Hare or Fox adapt to changing conditions or what biological champion builds from the bottom up? Why would mimicking these and other overarching patterns that life abides by, make sense? Perhaps because life has been doing this for more than 3.8 billion years, and that’s a lot of research and design that we can learn from. Learning from Nature, learning how to implement strategies and mechanisms from Nature into solutions is an important part of Biomimicry Design. Reconnecting to this very same Nature is just as essential, as are the ethical decisions you make when working out a design aimed to contribute to the sustainability of the solution. Come learn some basic methods to implement natural strategies into your project, and fall in love with these mentors who teach you how. Join us for a series of 4 biomimicry lectures/workshops to practice the steps. Draw, read, research, design, fall in love.

Contents

  • What is Biomimicry Design? The Essential Elements and participate in a Design Jam
  • What are Life's Principles? The overarching patterns in Nature we can learn from. What organisms show these clearly?
  • Nature's Forms, Processes and Systems - three levels of biomimicry
  • 'How to' - Learn the Technical Translation of biological strategies and mechanisms translated to design principles
  • *(all related to managing water, temperature or cultivating cooperative relationships).
