World War II ended decades ago, but its legacy remains contested. In this talk I examine the evolving significance of China’s experience in that conflict. The first part introduces recent developments in historical scholarship, including my recent research on wartime controversies between China and the Netherlands and their implications for the Dutch colonial position in Indonesia. The second part examines the recent surge of WWII memory in China and how the Chinese state mobilizes particular histories of the war to serve its present purposes.
