The Russian invasion of Ukraine has surprised many experts. Underlying the war in Ukraine is a range of factors, some geopolitical and some cultural and historical. In this meeting, we will reflect on the meaning of nationalism in the conflict, both on the part of Ukraine and Russia. What are the historical and current manifestations of Ukrainian nationalism? What are the defining aspects of Russian nationalism, considering the imperial context in which it developed? Finally, we hope to address the question whether the war necessitates a re-evaluation of existing scholarly interpretations of Russian and Ukrainian nationalism.
Nicolaas Kraft van Ermel (University of Groningen), is a historian of contemporary Ukraine, Russia and Poland. His research focuses on the political instrumentalization of history and religion in these countries. In 2020 he received his PhD for On the Crossroads of History: Politics of History in Ukraine and Questions of Identity in Post Cold-War Europe (1991-2019).
André Gerrits is Professor of International Studies and Global Politics at the University of Leiden and he is one of the co-founders of the Leiden University Nationalism Network. He is an expert of Russian history and politics and among his publications are: The Myth of Jewish Communism: A Historical Interpretation (2009) and Nationalism in Europe (2016).
