The Dutch scholar Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857–1936) was one of the most famous orientalists of his time and a major actor at Leiden University in the first three decades of the twentieth century. He acquired early fame through his research in Mecca in 1884-85. As an adviser to the colonial government in the Dutch East Indies from 1889 until 1906, he was on horseback during campaigns of “pacification” and published extensively on Indonesian cultures and languages. In 1906 he became a professor in Leiden and promoted together with colleagues abroad the study of modern Islam, meant to be useful for colonial purposes.
At the occasion of his 165th birthday Brill publishes Scholarship in Action, a volume of essays on his life and work edited by Léon Buskens, Jan Just Witkam and Annemarie van Sandwijk. The detailed studies of his life and work challenge us to reconsider common views of the history of the study of Islam in European academia and encourage a more nuanced “post-orientalist” approach with ample attention for cooperation, exchange, and hybridization. Two of the editors will present the volume and are looking forward to exchange on related issues in the history of orientalism in Leiden.
About Léon Buskens
Léon Buskens is an anthropologist studying law and culture in Muslim societies. One of his main research interests is how Muslims shape Islam in everyday life, in relation to other practices and to religious teachings. He has a longstanding interest in Morocco, and has more recently also started to do some research in Indonesia (focusing on Maluku and Papua) for comparative purposes.
Annemarie van Sandwijk
Annemarie van Sandwijk holds a double master's degree in History and Religious Studies (Leiden University) and works as a speechwriter at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
