This workshop on scientific integrity will give you the opportunity to discuss and reflect on (ir)responsible scholarship with fellow PhD candidates and postdocs.

For whom

Social and Behavioural Sciences PhD candidates and postdocs from Leiden University who are at least two years into their doctoral research, and who have previously participated in the Scientific Conduct course.

Topics

  • How do you handle misconduct situations?
  • Values behind our practices and what to do when they misalign
  • What avout the 'grey areas'? Reflection on cases where putting responsible research into practice is not so obvious.

What you'll learn

We will think back on what we’ve previously learned about scientific integrity, touch on what we have in place in our university to foster responsible practices, and leave the session with some motivating examples of responsible practices in the changing landscape of social sciences. Example topics to pick for discussion are: authorship, open science practices, making mistakes, and common ‘grey zone’ dilemmas.

Format

The workshop takes 3 hours. Before the meeting you are asked to re-read the Code of Conduct for Research Integrity and to prepare a handful of homework questions about this (homework sheet will be emailed to you prior to the meeting). The homework will take a maximum of two hours.

The topics of the discussion can be used by all participants under the Chatham House Rule.

After the meeting you will receive online materials, including resources to use for discussions in your research group, department or faculty. Together with future meetings, they will be the basis for a body of knowledge and suggestions to help you and your colleagues strengthen your ideas on this topic. The goal is to improve scientific integrity, within and outside our university.
