Sustainable housing
Sustainable housing is one of the key pillars of the University’s environmental policy. Sustainable construction requires an additional investment of time and money. However, these costs can be earned back with lower energy costs, longer building usage, less maintenance, better performance by the staff working there, and less waste during renovations and demolition.
Sustainability certificate BREEAM-NL
Leiden University is one of the first Dutch organisations to use the BREEAM-NL Construction and Renovation quality label for large-scale construction projects. The new Science Campus is currently under construction with a BREEAM certificate ‘very good’.
In future, the University wishes to use this quality label not only for new buildings, but also to improve the sustainability of existing buildings.
