Young Academy Leiden (YAL) is looking for new members

3 April 2025

Are you an early-career researcher eager to join a dynamic community committed to interdisciplinary research, academic policy, and societal outreach? Do you have a passion for education and research, and would you like to contribute to the future of academia? Then apply for the Young Academy Leiden (YAL).

Who can apply?

YAL members are young academics dedicated to addressing broader academic and societal challenges. Each year, YAL selects new members. Academic staff from Leiden University and LUMC who have obtained their PhD within the past eight years are eligible to apply. We encourage applications from disciplines that have been underrepresented in YAL, such as the Faculty of Law.

New members will begin their membership in September 2025 and commit an average of four hours per week to YAL activities. Membership lasts for five years.

How to apply?

To apply, please submit the following documents before May 1 2025, to Suzanne Brinkman via youngacademy@bb.leidenuniv.nl:

  • A motivation letter (max. 500 words) describing your interest in one or more of YAL’s focus areas (outreach, interdisciplinarity, policy, and community building) and how you would contribute to YAL.
  • CV (max. 2 pages).
  • A support letter from your scientific director or institute manager. View the template.
  • Confirmation of your availability for the interviews on June 3 2025.

After an initial selection based on the application documents, shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview on June 3 2025, in Leiden.
