Impact on the faculty of Executive Board’s decisions following government cuts

17 April 2025

On Tuesday, the Executive Board communicated the impact of the government cuts on the university. We would like to clarify here what this implies for our faculty.

While the decisions that have been taken within the framework of the proposed Balanced Internationalisation Bill (Wet Internationalisering in Balans) have no direct impact on Leiden Law School, the underlying impact of these decisions on the entire Leiden University academic community is serious. It is intolerable that politicians are forcing universities to intervene in the degree programmes they offer. We extend our hand of academic friendship to colleagues at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FSW) and speak out in support of them.

The proposed decision based on the advice of the university ‘Andere Tijden’ working group will affect our faculty. As yet, these consequences are relatively limited.

Impact on Honours College Law

Cuts are to be made in the honours education. This will affect how university and faculty honours education is organised and, as a result, also Honours College Law. In the coming months a more detailed programme structure will be developed.

Impact on the Van Vollenhoven Institute (VVI)

The VVI, like a number of other university departments, is facing a limited reduction of 5 per cent (€ 6000) on a special annual allocation it receives from the Executive Board. This measure is in line with other cuts that will be made in the 2026-2030 Framework Memorandum.

Our colleagues at the affected departments were informed personally of these decisions by the Executive Board on Tuesday. These decisions are separate from our own faculty budget process. We will, of course, also continue to update you on developments in that process.

Do you have any questions? Please do not hesitate to contact us. The Faculty Board feels it is very important to remain in close contact with each other throughout these uncertain times.
