What can the Study Advisers do for you as a staff member?

24 March 2025

The study advisers of the Faculty of Archaeology are Inge Tinbergen, Cleody van der Eijk, and Hanne Bergink. They work closely together as a team, besides which all three have their own specialisation, respectively neurodivergence, exchange and job market preparation.

The study advisers have a lot of expertise, which they enjoy sharing. You can refer your students to them, and they are also available for collegial advice and consultation. The study advisers are aware of the rules and regulations and the possible consequences if they are not followed, which can sometimes be serious for a student if they don't know what to do or are misinformed. Use the study advisers if you want to check whether you are properly referring, informing or helping your students on any of the topics listed below.

Are you concerned about the physical or mental well-being of one or more students? Check if they know about the study advisers. If you want to consult them yourself, please stop by. You can also contact them if a student no longer responds to your attempts to make contact. You can also do this without mentioning the student's name to keep it anonymous.

Do you witness friction or notice that a student is the cause or victim of unwanted behaviour? Or do you think a student is in an unsafe situation (either at University or privately)? You can refer the student to the study advisers, you could contact them yourself or send an email together with the student. You may also to contact the hotline for concerning behaviour. When you are uncertain about the situation or you are in doubt about your own role and the seriousness of the situation, feel welcome to discuss it (possibly without mentioning the student's name) with the study advisers.

The study advisers are available for study-related questions from students, but also definitely from lecturers! Not sure what the rules are regarding short postponement and thesis postponement? Do you have, or get, questions about the BSA, study progress or the study programme in general? Stop by or email the study advisers.  You can of course also refer students with questions about these topics.

In addition to being a study adviser, Hanne is career adviser for the Faculty and is involved in employability and job market preparation in that role. Employability is important for the university and our students. As a Faculty, we want to educate students who are sustainably employable on the job market, either within or outside of archaeology. As a lecturer you have expertise in your field, but more is needed for employability. That is where Hanne can help. Contact her for advice, tips and tricks, and devising quick wins within your courses. It does not have to be complicated to make your education more suitable in an accessible way and to integrate certain aspects of employability in your education. You can also refer students with career questions to Career Service Archaeology. E-mail: careerservice@arch.leidenuniv.nl

In addition to being a study adviser, Cleody is also exchange coordinator. You can contact her for support with exchange programmes, such as advice on partner Universities and cooperation opportunities. In addition, Cleody provides assistance with guidance for incoming and outgoing students, study planning and administrative procedures. She also supports or refers for all regulatory and logistical aspects, such as contracts, scholarships, visas and housing, to properly guide both incoming and outgoing students. You can contact her with questions about incoming exchange students or other exchange-related matters, just stop by or email to exchange@arch.leidenuniv.nl.

Of our team, Inge is most specialised in neurodivergent students. These include AD(H)D, autism, dyslexia and giftedness and many more. At the Faculty, we have close to 25% neurodivergent students within the student population. So we are all dealing with students with neurodivergent brains. With any questions about supporting a student who is studying with neurodivergence, or about neurodivergence in general, you can contact Inge. She also gives an annual presentation on this topic. Want tips on how to make your education more inclusive? This doesn't have to be complicated, Inge is happy to advise you.
