Strike on 10 March – information for staff
The latest news, including the most up-to-date programme, can be found at www.universiteitleiden.nl/10maart
On 10 March, staff from Leiden University are kicking off the Dutch universities’ staggered strike against the government cuts with strike action that includes a teach-out and a strike action at a central location in Leiden.
The Executive Board and deans support the initiative but have decided not to close the university. Read on to find out what the strike means for staff.
University to remain open
Our buildings will remain open on 10 March. The Executive Board will make every effort to ensure essential activities such as exams, PhD ceremonies and inaugural lectures go ahead as planned that day.
Inform your manager and students
University staff are free to strike on 10 March. But we do want to do all we can to ensure that young researchers do not have to cancel their PhD defences or that students do not miss compulsory exams or practicals and consequently fall behind in their studies.
If you are going to strike, you do not need to register this and will receive your salary as usual. But we would appreciate you informing your manager. If this means your teaching is cancelled, inform your students of this on Brightspace.
Compulsory exams and practicals
Attendance is not compulsory for students wishing to join their teaching staff’s strike action on 10 March, except for compulsory practicals and exams that cannot be retaken or postponed. It is students’ responsibility to catch up on what they have missed.
Faculty of Medicine students can decide for themselves whether they wish to attend classes. It is their responsibility to catch up on what they have missed. For compulsory classes, this may mean having to catch up in the next academic year.
Participating in a teach-out
Want to participate in a teach-out? Please register online (Dutch). If you have any questions regarding the teach-out, please reach out to the special Strike Teams.
