Faculty of Archaeology financially healthy

27 March 2025

We are happy to report that the Faculty of Archaeology proved to be financially healthy over 2024. For the 4th year in a row we present a positive result of €41k, all thanks to our staff.

Executive Dean Jan Pronk: 'Healthy finances are a prerequisite for continuing to invest in all our staff, and in our community, as we are now doing, for example, with a culture change trajectory. It is impressive that, as a small Faculty, we have been able to improve the financial situation considerably.'

Financial stability

The last years we worked really hard to achieve more financial stability. With the annual positive results we were able to improve the Faculty reserve of -2.5% in 2020 (the minimum is 5%) towards a reserve well over 6% in 2024. Considering the context of the nationals government's ‘Hoofdlijnenakkoord’ with its upcoming cutbacks and a possible pushback on internationalisation our University and, subsequentally, our Faculty, face potential budget cuts and a potential decrease in income (depending on the actual implementation government policies). With improving our current financial situation we believe we are much better suited to face these challenges.

Educational results and large research projects

In 2024 we had the opportunity to not only improve the educational results, but were also granted several large research projects. Meanwhile, our student population has been increasing. This means work pressure remains an ever more pressing issue. The Faculty's taskforce on our education programmes is therefore working hard on this topic to make our teaching more manageable whilst maintaining the outstanding level of our programme.
