Sign up for the upgrade of your laptop to Windows 11
Microsoft support for Windows 10 will soon be ending. All desktops and laptops managed by the ISSC from 2020 onwards will therefore be migrated to Windows 11. The migration to Windows 11 for staff from the Faculty Services is available from Tuesday 18 February to Friday 28 February.
NOTE: Do you work with a MacBook or use Linux as your operating system? Then your laptop/desktop will not be migrated to Windows 11 and you can ignore this email.
Make your appointment
You can use this form to make an appointment to turn in your laptop for the migration to Windows 11. The migration will take place in room CM.0.04 in the Gorlaeus Building. You can make an appointment during the period from Tuesday 18 February until Friday 28 February. Can't make an appointment during this period? Then you can make an appointment afterwards at another location.
The ISSC team is working in room CM.0.04 in the Gorlaeus Building. Please go to the room at the reserved time.
Take these steps beforehand
Step 1. Be prepared. In Windows 11, your personal storage space will no longer be on your P- drive, but instead this will be on your personal OneDrive, in the cloud.
- Transfer the data on your P- drive to your OneDrive. How to do this? You can do this yourself see helpdesk portal OneDrive: Frequently Asked Questions. Make sure that your files are fully synchronised with the cloud before the upgrade starts. You can see if this is done by the cloud icon. Anything that is not updated may be lost. Do you need assistance? You can ask via the helpdesk portal for help with transferring your files to OneDrive.
- If you have any data on your C- drive, then also transfer this to OneDrive. This includes, for example, the folders with web browser bookmarks, downloads and images, and any data from special software. You can either save your current email signature in a Word document or create a new signature after the migration using the university's email signature maker.
- Note in advance which functional mailboxes/shared mailboxes you have linked in Outlook. You will need to add them again afterwards. You can find the procedure in the helpdek portal: knowledge item 1137.
- Copy the list of programs you have added yourself from your Software Center. To do this, click on Installation Status in the Software Center and set the Filter to Application to see which programs are installed for you.
Step 2. Select when your laptop will be upgraded to Windows 11 via this booking form. Add the date to your calendar.
Step 3. Please arrive at the agreed time to hand in your laptop at room CM.0.04 in the Gorlaeus Building. You will also receive a reminder by email.
What to expect
- The upgrade of your laptop will take approximately two hours (though this may vary per device: about 45 minutes, followed by the installation of basic software.
- Do you work on a desktop? Prior to the migration of your desktop, you will find a flyer on your keyboard announcing when your desktop will be migrated to Windows 11. The scheduled days for the rollout of Windows 11 on desktop computers are from Friday, 21 February to Tuesday, 25 February. During and after this period, members of the rollout team will be available to answer questions. Your desktop PC will remain in the same place. Note: It is important that you complete the actions from step 1 before 21 February.
TIP: Coordinate the migration of your laptop with your colleagues if you are working on time-critical tasks. This ensures that there is always someone available with a functioning laptop within the department. If necessary, consult with your supervisor to determine the most suitable time for the migration: plan the upgrade of your laptop at a time when you will be in a meeting.
- Once Windows 11 is installed, you will receive a call asking you to come and log in to run through the final steps of the installation. NB: you must collect your own laptop, so don’t ask a colleague to do this for you.
- After the upgrade, the team will give you advice on how to use Windows 11 and assist you with your first login and installation of basic software.
- If software needs to be installed via the company portal (used to be Software Center), this may take longer.
- Besides a few visual changes to the workplace, there are also changes to the storage, (security) updates and installation of software. You will receive advice and support for starting to work with Windows 11 when you pick up the laptop.
- The most important changes are:
1) No more access to the P- drive: the files on your P- drive will need to be transferred to your personal OneDrive.
2) The J- Drive will only be accessible via eduVPN (Virtual Private Network). See the staff website: Install a VPN.
