Plant-based party on campus: discover and enjoy during Meat and Dairy-Free Week
It’s National Meat and Dairy-Free Week from 3 to 9 March – an invitation to the entire country to try a plant-based diet for a week. At the university, you will also have the chance to taste and try plant-based food and discover how delicious and varied it can be. During the week, no meat or dairy will be served at the university’s cafés and restaurants. Instead, a special range of 100% plant-based treats will be available.
Five vegetarian options
In addition, Leiden University Green Office (LUGO), the central team promoting sustainability at the university and our UFB catering staff invite you to:
- Come to the Beyond Meat food truck. Pick up a free sample on Tuesday at restaurant De Schotel on Leiden Bio Science Park (the lecture hall building next to the new Gorlaeus Building).
- Visit the Vegetarische Slager (‘Vegetarian Butcher’) stand. Stop by for tasty, sustainable lunch options at restaurants in the Lipsius Building (Monday), Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (Tuesday), the KOG Building (Wednesday), De Schotel (Thursday) and Wijnhaven (Friday).
- Visit LUGO’s information stands. On Monday in De Schotel (Faculty of Science), Wednesday in the KOG Building, Thursday in the Lipsius Building and Friday at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.
- Try the most popular plant-based roll. Our most popular is the grilled vegetable and houmous roll.
- Enjoy delicious free samples. Anyone who buys a luxury roll between 3 and 9 March (inclusive) will receive a free plant-based Alpro dessert. As well as this, all cafés will serve plant-based milk (including oat milk and soy milk) free of charge when you order a drink such as a cappuccino.
Sustainable food and drink
Does eating less meat make a difference? Scientists at Leiden University say that:
- less meat and dairy means more space for nature, leisure, the climate, biodiversity and justice and it’s good news for the economy.
- a plant-based diet contributes in many different ways to a cleaner environment and helps reduce CO2 emissions.
- across the globe, as much as 40% of the nutritional value of all arable crops goes to animal feed, which can result in deforestation and exacerbate the carbon problem.
- almost 100 billion tons of CO₂ could be removed from the atmosphere if high-income countries switch to a plant-based diet.
Together, we can make a positive difference for the future of our planet. Are you joining us?
