Ready for the start of our faculty’s anniversary celebrations?

28 January 2025

Next week it’s finally happening! Leiden University will be 450 years old. The start of this special anniversary year will officially get underway on Friday 7 February during the Dies Natalis in the Pieterskerk. ‘Our’ Professor Egbert Koops will be one of the speakers at that event.

A special moment will be the conferral of three honorary doctorates. One of the recipients is Bonnie Honig who was nominated by our faculty. The honorary supervisor is Bastiaan Rijpkema.

On the eve of the Dies Natalis, our faculty anniversary celebrations will get underway on 6 February. Leiden Law School also turns 450 years old. This special day certainly won’t go unnoticed as we’ll be celebrating in various ways.

A conversation with Bonnie Honig

First, Bonnie Honig will visit our faculty on 6 February on the occasion of her honorary doctorate. In the Grotius Lecture Hall from 15.10 to 13.30, she will have a conversation with three Leiden researchers about the defence of democracy.

A toast

After the event on 6 February with Bonnie Honig, together with our staff and students we’ll raise our glass at 16.00 in the KOG restaurant. Dean Suzan Stoter will hold a speech giving more details about the year’s programme to mark our faculty’s 450th anniversary. Not only can you listen – you can also see and taste. So, we’ll see you all there to toast our special birthday! If you happen to have a lecture or tutorial at that time, you’re very welcome to come along afterwards.

450-talk in the entrance hall

We also ask you to block Monday 10 February from 15.55 to 16.15 in your diary. A familiar face to us all will then give the very first 450-talk to Leiden Law School staff and students in the KOG entrance hall. Their name will be announced on 6 February. Together, we’ll make this an unforgettable anniversary year!
