Extra NWO-subsidies voor Open Access boeken en tijdschriften

17 December 2024

The Dutch Research Council NWO encourages researchers to publish work in open access. Authors can now request a grant for publishing their book in open access, while journal editors can apply for financial support for transitioning a journal to a Diamond Open Access business model. Check the NWO website for full details on funding for 'Open Access Books' and the 'Diamond Open Access fund'.

Open Access publishing for books

Open access publishing means that a publication can be read (online), shared, and content reused without libraries or readers paying for access. Therefore, the chances increase that the work will reach a wide audience and have a broader impact.

To publish their book in open access, authors may be charged a publication fee. NWO can contribute to such publication fees. A grant up to €10,000 is available for each research project to cover the open access publication costs of a book. This book, edited volume or monograph must be the result of a research project funded by NWO, and it must be published by a scholarly publisher after peer review. Applications for this book publishing subsidy can be submitted on a rolling basis, up to 5 years after the project has been completed. View all the specifications of this fund on the NWO website.

'Flip' journals to Diamond Open Access

Diamond Open Access means that individual authors do not pay to publish. Instead, the journal's publishing costs are borne by third parties such as universities, research institutes, learned societies, foundations or associations.

NWO makes funding now available for editors who want to convert ('flip') their existing scholarly journal to a Diamond Open Access model. A maximum of €50,000 is available per project, to cover transition costs in the period up to 24 months, which they needt to switch to a sustainable, Diamond open access model for the long term. Both national and international journals are eligible, as long as a researcher affiliated with a Dutch institution submits the application. View the specifications of this fund on the NWO website.
