Oxford University Press: annual cap for open access articles - avoid extra charges
Several agreements between the Dutch Universities (UNL) and academic publishers have set an annual cap: a maximum number of articles that can be published per year in open access at no cost for the authors. We reached now another cap at Oxford University Press (OUP) for their hybrid journals after Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) and SpringerNature reached theirs. From now on, LWW, SpringerNature and OUP will invoice individual authors for the open access fees. For Taylor & Francis we expect to reach the maximum in the last week of november. Make sure you do not unintentionally receive a publishing bill.
What to do if your article has been accepted by LWW?
If your article gets accepted for publication by OUP's hybrid journals, LWW or SpringerNature between today and 31 December 2024 – regardless of the date of original submission – the publisher will charge the corresponding author for the publication fees. Articles that get accepted from 1 January 2025 onwards will be covered by next year’s agreement.
OUP's Full Open Access journals covered by the deal
The cap of the Full Open Access journals published by OUP has not been reached yet. The fee for publishing open access in these journals is still covered by the agreement. The Full Open Access journals of OUP covered by the deal are:
- Briefings In Bioinformatics
- FEMS Microbiology Ecology
- FEMS Microbiology Reviews
- FEMS Yeast Research
- Geophysical Journal International
- Health Policy and Planning
- Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
- Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society: Letters
- Pathogens and Disease
You can still choose to publish your article in open access at LWW, SpringerNature and OUP, if you can cover the open access fees through, for instance, your research grant or via your institute. The university and LUMC do not have a central budget to cover these publication fees.
If you cannot cover the fees for open publication, you can publish your article with OUP's hyprid journals, LWW or SpringerNature in closed access. There are then alternative routes toward making your article open access. Consider, for instance:
- uploading an author’s manuscript to the university’s Scholarly Publications repository, via LUCRIS (with possible embargo period depending on the publisher’s conditions);
- making use of the Taverne-amendment in the Dutch Copyright Act, which allows open access six months after the article is published.
The University Library’s webpages on Open Access list all available options.
Important to note: external research funders may have set specific conditions for publishing, which differ per project type and time frame. It is important to comply with these conditions.
To help you navigate the options available, we strongly recommend all authors whose manuscript is accepted by LWW, SpringerNature or a hybrid journal of OUP after today to contact the University Library’s Open Access Team: openaccess@library.leidenuniv.nl
Notification service
Taylor & Francis, ACS and some other publishers have set a cap too, just like LWW, SpringerNature and OUP. We expect that the cap at Taylor & Francis will be reached in the last week of November. Would you like to be informed about the annual maximums of the agreements? Feel free to register for the notification service to receive updates on the agreements and their impending caps.
