New date for protest against higher education cuts: 25 November in The Hague

19 November 2024

Following the cancelled Utrecht protest and the fantastic local demonstrations by students and staff in Leiden and The Hague, the national protest against the cuts will now be held on 25 November at Malieveld in The Hague. We, the Executive Board and deans, support this protest and call upon students and staff from Leiden University to join us in The Hague and make their voices heard.

We find both the scale of the plans and the uncertainty they bring to the education sector unwise and downright irresponsible. The quality of our research and teaching is at stake. A high turnout on 14 November will underscore our support for this message.

The protest is organised by organisations including WOinActie, AOb, FNV, CNV, LSVB and ISO, and will take place on Monday 25 November, from 13:00 to 15:00, at Malieveld in The Hague. The programe includes speakers and music.

Teaching on Monday afternoon

To prevent additional work and study pressure, we have decided not to declare a lecture-free afternoon for the whole university. Are you teaching on Monday afternoon and do you want to travel to The Hague? Please consult directly with your students. Do make sure that your students receive all the teaching material within the duration of your course.

You will find the rules on compulsory attendance for students on the student website.

Travel expenses

As The Hague is easily accessible by train, we will not be organising buses. However, we are happy to cover staff travel costs via our new travel allowance scheme. Please use your new Shuttel card for this.

Sign the petition

As well as making your voice heard in The Hague, you can also sign the petition (in Dutch), which is part of the campaign against the cuts in higher education.
