Guidelines for retracting academic publications

19 November 2024

The Leiden University Executive Board and the LUMC Board of Directors adopted retraction guidelines this spring. The guidelines help with decision-making and communication on retraction requests following breaches of academic integrity.

Our research must be conducted in a scrupulous, fair, verifiable, impartial and independent manner. When a breach of academic integrity in research is proven, the Academic Integrity Committee issues advice to the Executive Board. The Board can decide that publications based on this research have to be retracted.

The retraction guidelines describe various steps in the process, such as informing the person(s) accused and co-authors and requesting the publication be retracted. The new guidelines will help ensure responsible research, build trust in academia and protect people involved such as co-authors.
