Trade Union Month: join a union now at a discount

5 September 2024

Union membership is important. Unions negotiate on your behalf with your employer about your terms and conditions of employment. These collective terms of employment are set out in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO-NU).

In these turbulent times, membership is particularly important: you strengthen your position as a university employee and can have a say in the changes coming our way. The more members they have, the stronger the voice of the unions and yours. And a union can offer advice or legal support in difficult situations, for instance a conflict with your manager or employer.

Our collective labour agreement states your employer, so the university, has agreed to pay a fixed sum of €100 (net) toward your dues if you join a union in September or October: Trade Union Month. One more reason to join now and enjoy all the benefits of union membership! So take a look at the websites of the three unions active at Leiden University – AOb, FNV and CNV – and join one this September or October.

Note: if you offset your union fees against your gross holiday allowance or end-of-year bonus through the individual choice model, you cannot include the €100 allowance. For example: your annual union membership is €300. You have a €100 allowance. You can then offset  €200 through the individual choice model. Find out how to offset your union dues.
