Installation security cameras in the Herta Mohr building
To ensure that our work and study environment is as safe and secure as possible, all the university buildings and grounds have camera surveillance in place. Cameras will also soon be installed in the Herta Mohr Building. Starting September 16, these cameras will be placed on the first floor near the main entrance of the Herta Mohr building, at the Maliebaan emergency exit and at the entrance to the parking garage. In addition, cameras will be installed in the parking basement at both the bicycle and car entrances. This camera surveillance will also be indicated in the building with the standard stickers and signs that are used in other university buildings.
Before this decision was taken, various interests were carefully weighed by the Buildings Security Measures Coordinating Team, which then gave positive advice. The purpose of the cameras is to assure the safety and security of property, staff members and students. The cameras will not be used to monitor any individuals or groups.
Within two months after the cameras have been installed, the Privacy Office will conduct another review of the images from the cameras and the areas to be recorded. If the images meet the previously made agreements, final approval will take place - the outcome will be added to this post as an update in October.
Standard procedure
It is important to the university that the approach to the installation of cameras should be transparent and diligent. Therefore the decision-making process for installing security cameras has followed a standard step-by-step procedure since the 24-25 academic year, involving the Security Office and Privacy Office, among others, and the weighing of multiple interests. We also make use of an overarching Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) with a site-specific addendum. This means that the cameras we install are compliant with all applicable legal requirements, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The University Council has given positive advice on this approach. For more information about this process, please see the website..
