Recently, new surveillance cameras were installed inside and outside the Kamerlingh Onnes Building (KOG) at Leiden Law School and outdated equipment was replaced. In doing so, we aim to ensure a safe work and study environment for our staff and students. New surveillance cameras have also been installed and tested on the outside of the building. These are not currently in use.

Studying and working in a safe environment

Leiden University uses surveillance cameras to monitor security at its buildings across Leiden and The Hague. This allows students, teaching staff and other employees to study and work in a safe environment.

Internal and external cameras

Some surveillance cameras at the KOG were outdated and have been replaced. In addition, cameras have been installed at a number of additional locations to monitor buildings, property and people. A total of 20 new surveillance cameras have been hung in the KOG and nine outdated cameras have been replaced.

On the advice of external services, 19 cameras have been mounted on the outside of the KOG. At the moment, they are not switched on. We are currently auditing security and privacy in relation to these external cameras, as in this case local residents are also an interested party.

In doing so, we are complying with the General Data Protection Regulation and the legal guidelines of the Dutch Data Protection Authority. You will be informed in advance when this inquiry has been completed and the external cameras can also be switched on.

Camera images

Certain live camera images can be viewed by the KOG’s receptionists. In the event of an emergency, immediate action can then be taken. In the future, other images from the surveillance cameras can only be viewed by colleagues authorised for this purpose. Data will be saved on a secure internal server and automatically replaced with more recent images after 28 days.
