Your voice in the Faculty Council!
Who are we?
In Dutch Universities, participation bodies play an important, legally-binding role in representing the interest of both staff and students in decision-making processes. On the level of faculties, the Faculty Council is the only advising body with legal rights to advise on and in some cases, to veto Board decisions.
At the Faculty of Archaeology, the Faculty Council is composed of three student seats (on a one-year mandate) and three staff seats (on a two-year mandate). Our working areas incorporate financial affairs, human resources, education and research.
What do we do?
Our main role is to voice the constituency’s concerns (you!) and think along with the board on decisions and strategies. The topics are very diverse and can range from finances to education strategies to logistics. A lot of the work involves reviewing official policy documents. In this, we also liaise back with the University Council for the central policies that directly affect the student and work life at the faculty.
This past year, we advised on topics such as how the faculty should screen for projects funded by governments that target human rights, as well as a road map for burnout during the PhD, reported on the quality agreements, and worked on increasing the transparency of faculty processes.
Why run for a candidate?
Keep in mind: the more diverse the Faculty Council, the more functional! Part of being an efficient advice body is to represent as much of the student and staff population at the faculty as possible. Do you feel like your perspective could give representation to groups that need to be heard? Do you want to contribute to improving the faculty? Are you curious to tackle those topics from behind the administrative curtain? Then consider running as a candidate.
