Our former colleague Gerben Bruinsma passed away on 17 May 2022. Gerben was Professor in Criminology at our faculty between 1999 and 2009. From 1999 to 2017, he was also Director of the  Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement, also located in Leiden.

He played an important role in establishing and developing the Department of Criminology and the criminology study programmes. Among other things, he lectured in the Theoretical Criminology course. For many years, he was actively involved and a regular participant at conferences of the Dutch Society of Criminology. Many of us worked together with Gerben and ‘grew up’ with his work. We offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends and hope that good memories can offer some comfort at this difficult time.
